Become a certified lifeguard with this Blended Learning course.


This course will include first aid and CPR/AED training, patron surveillance, water rescue, teamwork, and communication skills. Throughout the course, you will learn the knowledge and skills required to become a professional lifeguard. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for 2 years.


The course meets on the following dates and times:

  • February 19 | 8am-7pm at the Leventhal-Sidman JCC
  • February 20 | 10am–3pm at the Charles River YMCA
  • February 21 | 9am–7pm at the Leventhal-Sidman JCC

Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:

  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed).
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.

Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed).
  • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7–10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object out the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Prerequisite 3: Complete all online course work before the first day of class

  • Links will be sent once you sign up for the course
  • All course work ahead of time is online
  • All coursework must be completed before the start of the class
  • Participants must come with either a printed or screen shot of completion of the online work
  • If coursework is not completed participant cannot join the class and will not receive a refund


Participants must be 15 years old by the last day of the course.

Refund policy: If participants do not complete the online portion before the in-person sessions, no refunds will be given. If participants fail the pre-course session, there is an option to reschedule for another Lifeguard offering through the JCC with credit. If participants fail any other part of the certification class (final assessments, final exam, skill proficiency), no refund or credit will be given. If participants cancel within 7 days of the class start, no refund will be given.
