Director of People & Culture

The Director of People & Culture will be focused on developing the vision, priorities, and plan to improve the quality of our employee experience, to create a more collaborative, learning culture and to deeply engage employees across the organization in the values, goals and mission of JCC Greater Boston. This role will help us reach our goal of making JCC Greater Boston an energizing, inspiring and supportive place to work.

This individual, with the support of a cross-functional working group, will have the opportunity to lead in the development and implementation of a set of strategic practices and systems to improve overall employee engagement, training and coaching support, recruitment and workforce planning practices, performance management systems and internal communication. This role will also support the day-to-day needs of managers through management coaching, professional development offerings, workforce planning, on-boarding support, individual goal-setting and recruitment. This role will also help spearhead efforts, with the support of the Technology department, to streamline and modernize key processes like performance management, on-boarding, recruitment, open enrollment and time & attendance through technology solutions.

This role will work within the Human Resources team which currently supports all Human Resources efforts, including employee relations, on-boarding, payroll and benefits and performance management for the ~400 year-round staff and ~600 seasonal staff at JCC Greater Boston. This individual will report directly to the Chief Finance and Administrative Officer and will work in close partnership with the Director of Human Resources.

Employee Engagement

  • With the support of the working group, create a culture of trust, collaboration and learning by designing and implementing strategies that focus on developing employee strengths, encouraging cross-divisional work and using data to inform decision-making.
  • Deepen engagement by collaboratively designing and leading initiatives that allow employees to engage with and learn from each other across departments, including but not limited to, organizing staff meetings, staff celebrations and other staff-oriented events.
  • Ground employees in JCC Greater Boston’s mission and vision by evolving a framework for core values and using them to help create cultural norms, celebrate accomplishments, manage performance, support priority setting, and decision-making, and inform day-to-day management.
  • Promote diversity, equity and inclusion by ensuring a safe and inclusive working environment, embedding these values throughout JCC Greater Boston’s HR practices and serving as a model of inclusive leadership practice. 
  • Create alignment between JCC Greater Boston’s core values and our HR practice by assessing our current policies and procedures and making recommendations as appropriate.

Training & Coaching

  • Develop stronger management skills and practice throughout the organization; through on-going training and coaching, support managers in establishing effective supervisory relationships and leading their teams in alignment with JCC Greater Boston’s core values.
  • Make all new staff feel welcomed by expanding on the current on-boarding system to provide new employees with the basic foundational knowledge needed to work at JCC Greater Boston and to support managers in developing function specific on-boarding and near-term goal setting.
  • Inspire a culture of growth by creating professional development opportunities and leadership pathways for staff including developing a set of core competencies that are aligned with core values.
  • Promote goal-based performance and cross-functional collaboration by redesigning and overseeing a system for effective performance management and cross-functional planning that is aligned with organizational outcomes, values and core competencies.
  • Drive toward organizational strategic goals and improve employee performance by leading organization through employee performance review and individual goal-setting processes in alignment with annual planning and priority setting process.

Recruiting & Workforce Planning

  • Build a highly competent and committed workforce by developing organizational systems, trainings and supports to scaffold managers in their recruitment and workforce planning efforts.
  • Simplify the recruitment process by optimizing sourcing and selection practices through technology-based solutions and caring for day-to-day recruitment activities including support in developing job descriptions, posting roles, organization of career fairs and initial screening of resumes for year-round staff.
  • Maximize organizational effectiveness and efficiency by advising and influencing organization leaders on proper staffing, organizational structure, and people related processes and efficiencies. Develop work-force planning framework for use in annual planning and succession planning.
  • Increase JCC Greater Boston’s ability to attract and retain staff by designing and implement a clear and competitive compensation structure (including benefits) and make recommendations for policies and procedures to determine salary increases, promotions, and other compensation decisions.

Internal Communication

  • Working with the marketing department and senior leadership, as well as the cross-functional working group, ensure staff are consistently and effectively engaged as members of the JCC Greater Boston community by developing a proactive and robust internal communication systems in collaboration with marketing and senior management.
  • Increase operational efficacy and employee self-service opportunities by recommending and implementing effective HR and communication technologies.
  • Build a knowledge-base and promote a culture of learning regarding effective HR practices by creating a set of HR metrics - including employee data, employment status, diversity, retention and turnover, engagement, and performance - for regular reporting and benchmarking.

Qualifications

  • 7 to 10 years of related experience with emphasis on talent development, talent management, organizational development, and/or recruitment preferred.
  • A Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree and/or professional certification (e.g. SPHR, PHR, SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP) preferred.
  • Strong connection to the values and mission of JCC Greater Boston.
  • Experience working with organizational leaders to set a vision around talent and engagement activities.
  • Demonstrated desire to seek understanding of others’ perspectives and to build relationships through collaboration; proven record of being open, responsive and approachable.
  • Ability to lead with inquiry, to anticipate questions and to be open to feedback from others.
  • Proven success in leading organizational change, including ability to prioritize, delegate, and manage against goals.

Administrative Development Coordinator

JCC Greater Boston (JCC) is seeking a self-motivated Administrative Development Coordinator to join our Development team.  Reporting to the VP of Development, the Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all aspects of Development Operations. The JCC is looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a measurable record of accomplishment, experience working with volunteer leadership and successful teams, and knowledge of the Boston, or similar, Jewish community to help achieve or exceed our goals.

Essential Functions include:

Database Management

  • Use database to track visits, calls, solicitations, donor interests and other key information and extract information for team and individual needs
  • Improve and maintain data integrity by collecting and updating all key donor data, including foundation giving and gifts to other institutions
  • Improve organization-wide data integration for Development team, including collection of event and program attendance and coding for proper segmentation
  • Provide data on annual campaign progress and status, as needed

Gift Entry

  • Coordinate with Business Office to ensure that all gifts are entered properly in database
  • Inform Business Office of any special situations or specific instructions to comply with donor intention

Donor Correspondence

  • Coordinate weekly general and customized donor acknowledgement letters
  • Assist with other projects such as “in honor of” and “in memory of” cards
  • Assist with Foundation grant applications and reporting
  • File and maintain donor records, correspondence, and other relevant information
  • Prepare Development reports, in coordination with IT Department, as needed

Billing

  • Monthly billing of gifts
  • Track overdue gifts and report information to supervisor

Event Support

  • Support lead staff on annual Gala and Golf events, as well as other events as needed
  • Manage gift entry, tracking and acknowledgement
  • Perform other tasks as needed in preparation for events, committee meetings and individual solicitations

General Administrative

  • Maintain Departmental calendar of activities
  • Generate and send weekly upcoming visits report to internal and external teams
  • Help set up meetings and make room reservations & food orders when needed
  • Assist with research and prepare materials for President/CEO and VP of Development in advance of key meetings and events

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree, combined with two or more years of experience in fundraising, sales, or other customer service-oriented administrative work. This position requires strong verbal and writing skills, and the ability to work in an environment involving multiple tasks and priorities. The ability to work independently as well as in a collegial team environment is essential. Candidates must have strong competency in Microsoft Office Suite programs, particularly Excel. Experience working with fundraising or other similar customer management data base systems is preferred. Demonstrated ability to work with and maintain confidential information.

Program Assistant (17 hours/week)

JCC Greater Boston seeks a part-time employee for a position with our preschool and youth programs. This position includes a blend of administrative work, parent correspondence, interaction with children, and relationship building with part-time program instructors. We are seeking a motivated, customer service focused individual who can problem solve and create efficient systems.

  • Administrative Work: printing and updating class rosters, hourly payroll, managing refunds and class/program changes
  • Parent Correspondence: sending photos and updates about once per month to parents, working with parents to find classes that are a good fit for their children
  • Interaction with Children: greeting children at the door of the JCC and escorting them to programs in the building, overseeing successful escorting of children from the preschool to classes
  • Relationship Building with Instructors: point-person for instructors, managing communication around weather-related closing and absences

Hours: Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 12:30-3:30, Tuesday/Thursday from 12:30-4:30 – person must be present in the building during these hours. Benefits: $13/hour, use of the JCC facility, involvement in growing children’s programming

Part-time Experiential Educators

JCC Greater Boston seeks part-time educators for Discovery Club, starting fall 2018. Discovery Club invites kids ages 5-8 to connect with Jewish values and culture through skill-building activities that nurture each child’s specific interests. We are looking for experienced, talented individuals who can help kids make connections between Jewish life and the world around them, and are willing to be both teachers and role models. Number of hours per week and exact location(s) can vary, depending on your schedule and flexibility; we are currently seeking instructors for Newton, Somerville, and Jamaica Plain during afterschool time (3pm and on).

Fitness Center

Fitness Director

The Fitness Director will be focused on the overall operation of the new Fitness Center including but not limited to:

  • Supervision of full time staff and 18 personal trainers. Including, hiring, training, mentoring, scheduling and ongoing supervision
  • Income generation related to personal training. Managing all aspects of the trainers income and expenses related to personal training.
  • Oversight of all maintenance of fitness center
  • Ensure a safe customer service oriented operation
  • Work with membership department on all new member onboarding

The Fitness Director will work in conjunction with other departments in Health and Wellness as well as the other departments at the JCC, including, preschool, camping, arts and culture and development

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: BS in Exercise Science or related field. Personal training certification. Must be current in CPR, First Aid and AED.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years Personal training or related experience. Personnel management and supervision experience required.
  • Candidates must possess the personality and demeanor to interact with staff and the community at large. Experience in customer service and sales. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Age Group Swim Coach:

Karishim Swim Club (KASC), a competitive swimming club in Newton, MA, is currently accepting applications for the position of Age Group Coach.  We are looking for a coach who is a dynamic team player and is excited to help KASC continue its growth in both size and achievement. Job Details:

  • Prepare practices on a weekly basis based on phase of training and swimmer’s needs/ability

Class Supervisor:

The Aquatics Department of JCC Greater Boston in Newton is looking to hire a Class Supervisor.  We are looking for someone with an outgoing personality who can provide excellent customer service.  You must be able to develop personal working relationships with members and be able to help and resolve member issues and concerns as well as check in the swim lesson clientele.  It is important that you are self-motivated, able to multi-task and are comfortable speaking to parents and children.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Initiating warm and friendly welcome to all clients entering the pool facility.
  • Be helpful, considerate and try to work out any issues.
  • Accountability for the physical appearance and overall organization of the pool, including station set-up, aquatics equipment, deck furniture, and station breakdown.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of and ability to communicate the particulars regarding the Swim Academy program to clients.
  • Taking attendance for each scheduled class.
  • Help monitor safety and act as “another set of eyes” at the pool.  Make sure you are hanging out near the lower levels. The children’s safety is always the most important responsibility.
  • Make sure that all children under the age of 3.5 wear a SWIM DIAPER, VINYL SWIM PANT AND A SWIM SUIT.
  • Give out skill stickers to the students.
  • Help facilitate communication between parents and the instructors or the office.
  • Maintain clear access around the pools.
  • Assist instructors to give the office any level changes.
