Step to Gymnastics II - Ages 4-5 yrs - Winter

Mah Jongg - Adults - Summer

Learn the fundamentals necessary to play the game using National Mah Jongg League official rules. Enjoy the game, camaraderie and ritual that goes along with this traditional pastime on the comeback. Please note: Must attend first class. Instructor: Amy McLoughlin

Little Explorers - Child Development class - Ages 6-9 months, with adult - Summer 15

Focus now on play time for baby! Regular routines with song, baby sign language, parachute play and story time are just some of the activities. Explorations: Adult Learning and Enrichment

Summer 2015 Session

Temple Beth Avodah, July 9, 16, 23, 30, August 6, 13 (10am-12:30pm)

Explore new interests. Develop greater understanding of current events. Join other active learners in the JCC’s six-week Explorations program.

Session 1 • 10-11am
Robert Frost: The Misunderstood Poet
Theatrical presentation and inclusive group discussion of the poetry of Robert Frost. Discussion will be led by Steven Collins who teaches seminars on Whitman, Hardy, Shakespeare, Frost and Contemporary Poetry throughout the country.

Chair Yoga
Chair Yoga is a gentle form of yoga whereby participants use a chair for support, either standing or sitting. Class themes around Jewish life values will be incorporated to foster a feeling of community among participants and provide emotional and mental support. Instructor Heidi White has been practicing yoga for 15 years. She is also a certified personal trainer.

Sugar: Friend or Foe? (July 23)
What is sugar’s effect on our bodies? Gain a deeper understanding of the relationship sugar has to our physical health. Lecturer Dr. Hans Fisher brings a wealth of knowledge about nutrition from his career as a nutritional biochemistry professor at Rutgers University.

Current Events
In this course, you’ll discuss and analyze national and international news stories. Discussion will be led by Lois Sockol who taught in the Newton Public Schools for 25 years. She is a published author of short stories and a self-defined news junkie.

Singer/Pianist Lisa Yves (July 9)
Performer Lisa Yves plays and sings showtunes, pop songs, jazz, sing-alongs, songs from the Great American Songbook, and more. Lisa holds a BA in Jazz Vocal Performance from New York University. She teaches pop singing techniques and is well known locally and nationally for her “Jazz For Kids” program.

Education for All Children (July 16)
Award-winning author Elizabeth Suneby will discuss the realities of 69 million school-aged children who are denied the fundamental human right of an education. She is the author of several Jewish themed books.

Introduction to Jewish Genealogy (July 23)
Curious about your family’s history and background? Lecturer from the Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Boston will present different modes of researching your family to learn about your own family history. The Society offers monthly educational programs, provides an extensive collection of research materials, and publishes an award-winning journal, Mass-Pocha.

The Changing Image of Jews on American Television (July 30)
The lecture will trace the evolution of the Jewish image on TV over the last 50 years, an image that almost always reflected the changing social status of Jews in America. Lecturer Dr. Lawrence Lowenthal has taught courses on Jewish history, film, literature and humor at Northeastern University. He was the Executive Director of the Greater Boston Chapter of the American Jewish Committee for 20 years.

The Jewish and Humane Responses to Hurricane Katrina (August 6)
Katrina changed the face of New Orleans and the Jewish community there. What were the Jewish and the humane responses to the devastation of the storm and what is left of Jewish New Orleans today? Lecturer Dr. Amos Lassen has taught courses in philosophy, Torah, English and Hebrew Literature.

Jews on the American Stage: From Clifford Odets to Neil Simon (August 13)
How have Jews been portrayed on the mainstream 20th century American stage? This talk will focus on how Jews moved from cartoon figures to flesh and blood portrayals, from the fringe into the center of American life. Discussion with focus mostly on Odets’ Awake and Sing! and Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs. Discussion will be led by Dr. Stuart Hecht, an Associate Professor of Theatre at Boston College.
