Considering Kaleidoscope
My child loves the arts but is not especially gifted in any one area. Will s/he be comfortable at Kaleidoscope?
Yes. Arts exploration and fun in a nurturing environment are the cornerstones of Kaleidoscope. Although we have many campers who have specialized talents, as a community we focus on process more than on outcome. Any child with interest in the arts should feel at home at camp.
Is Kaleidoscope “boy-friendly”?
Kaleidoscope is a coed camp and attracts children of all ages, genders and abilities. Activities are designed to be appealing to both boys and girls.
Camp Life
What should campers bring to camp?
Every camper should bring a kosher (vegetarian or dairy) lunch and snack, water bottle, sunscreen, bathing suit, bathing cap (required for the indoor pool), towel and hat.
My child is not interested in sports and is not competitive at all. What is the camp’s culture like?
Physical activity is an important part of our days. Sports activities emphasize teamwork and having fun over competition. Some campers love to challenge themselves physically; others prefer quieter, gentler forms of recreation. All of these needs are accommodated.
Upper Camp participants (grades 4-8) choose their electives weekly and may opt for other activities. Younger campers may opt out of sports activities with parent approval.
My child is afraid to swim. How do you handle this at camp?
The JCC camps view swimming as a life skill, and encourage children to build confidence in the water. Some campers begin at the zero-entry option at the JCC outdoor pool and, with the support of trained instructors, gradually grow more comfortable with swimming. All campers are tested and are placed in appropriate settings. Parents are welcome to call with any questions about their children’s progress.
What is the camp’s Jewish content?
JCC Kaleidoscope Creative Arts & Science Camp is open to the entire community. Our staff and campers share a sense of Jewish pride, and Jewish themes are woven through camp life; however, campers of all faiths and beliefs are welcome. No Jewish background or education is required or expected.
All food provided by the camp is certified kosher.
